A tropical storm caused severe flooding in the Philippines on Friday, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people in areas near swollen rivers and waterways as well as shutting down schools and offices in the capital and nearby provinces.
The country's Department of Social Welfare and Development estimates that about half a million people have been affected by the floods, while two died in Quezon City because of rising water levels.
Trading in the Philippine stock and currency markets was canceled Friday as many streets in the capital were underwater, stranding vehicles and thousands of commuters. Most parts of metropolitan Manila are below sea level, making them susceptible to flooding.
Television footage also showed people wading in chest-deep waters and many stranded on the roof or second levels of their homes waiting for rescue teams to take them to safety.
