The Federal Government of Nigeria
has announced the successful containment of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease
(EVD).
Onyebuchi Chukwu, minister of
health, who made this known in a statement by Dan Nwomeh, special assistant on
media and communication to the minister, said that Nigeria had thirteen cases
of EVD including the index case, Patrick Saywer, the late Liberian-American who
imported the dreaded contagious disease while on a trip to attend an official
assignment in Nigeria on July 20, 2014.
With yesterday been the 38th day
since the deadly virus came into the country, Chukwu revealed that the country
has only one confirmed case of EVD, a secondary contact of Patrick Sawyer’s and
spouse of one of the physicians who participated in the management of the index
case.
According to the health minister,
“She is stable but still on treatment at the isolation ward in Lagos. As at
yesterday, 26th August, 2014, Nigeria has had thirteen cases of EVD
including the index case. Of these thirteen, five including the index case
unfortunately did not survive the disease and are now late. However, seven of
the infected persons were successfully managed at the isolation ward in Lagos
and have been discharged home.”
Two of the treated patients, a male
doctor and a female nurse, were discharged yesterday evening, 25th August, 2014
having satisfied the criteria for discharge.
