Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim
Shettima yesterday revealed that 900 schools have been destroyed and 176
teachers killed in the last 3years by members of Boko Haram in the State. He
made this announcement yesterday during the inaugural meeting of the Steering
Committee of the Safe Schools Initiative which is aimed at ensuring a smooth
implementation of the safe school project.
The meeting which held at the
headquarters of the Ministry of Finance in Abuja, was attended by the Minister
of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Governor of Borno State, Yobe State,
Alhaji Dangote, Thisday Newspapers, Nduka Obaigbena, Director-General National
Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Sani Sidi, representative of the National Security
Adviser; representative of the National Council of Women’s Societies, Mrs. Edna
Azura and a representative of Adamawa State governor.
Some of the options being discussed
by the committee for immediate implementation are visual, temporary and mobile
schools, which are schooling at home, in a box, container and tents. Long term
strategies for rebuilding schools were also discussed.
So far, $20m had been raised for the
project with the Federal Government contributing $10m while investors in the
private sector also provided $10m.
