Governor Jona Jang declares Tuesday public holiday in Plateau

Jona Jang

Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau has declared Tuesday, February 25, a public holiday, to enable residents vote for their local government council officials.
Mr. Jang announced the holiday in Jos on Friday when he inaugurated the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, campaign for the election in northern senatorial district.
The governor called for peaceful conduct throughout the election period, saying necessary security arrangements had been put in place for that day.
He said “I urge all of you that will be participating in the elections to be peaceful.
“All security arrangements have been made, and I have the assurances of the security chiefs that they are fully ready for the polls.
“We will declare Tuesday a public holiday, and as usual, there will be no movement of vehicles; people should come out early to vote for their candidates.
“We don’t rig elections, we win elections, so we must work for victory by coming out to vote as we did in 2011.’’
According to him, the outcome of the local government polls will determine the foundation toward re-electing President Goodluck Jonathan as president in 2015.
“I have already told him (president) that he is going to win effortlessly in Plateau. I have told him that he does not need to campaign here,” he said.
Mr. Jang also promised that the 17 local government chairmen that would emerge from the polls would work assiduously for the development of the local governments under his supervision.
“For the one year plus that they will work with me, I am sure that the chairmen will work wonders,” he added.
He, however, promised the people that God would give them a governor after His own heart when his tenure expired in 2015.
“It is good to have ambition, but it is not good to be over ambitious; God is going to anoint a governor for Plateau, it may be a woman this time,” he said.
Mr. Jang also berated the people for turning away from God often, and blamed that for the consistent bloodshed in the state.
The Deputy Governor, Ignatius Longjang, in his speech at the rally, admonished the people to work for peace.
He said “we want a successful election, we must avoid violence, bitterness and anti party activities.’’
The state Chairman of the PDP, Haruna Dabin, said that the northern zonal rally was a climax of the rallies in the other three senatorial zones.
He said “this is the mother of all rallies; we thank the governor for making our victory easy with his good works.’’
