The Global Jihad

The Global Jihad
Radical fundamentalists are on the march under the banner of Jihad in Nigeria, Mali, Kenya, Somalia, Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria and Yemen. In Libya, the state has practically collapsed as contending factions of radical Islamists slug it out with tanks, anti-aircraft guns, AK 47s and rocket-propelled grenades. In Egypt, an audacious attempt by the Muslim Brotherhood to convert post-Mubarak popular aspirations for freedom and democracy into a brazen push for an Iran-style Islamic Republic dominated by Mullahs was thwarted only by the resolve of the Egyptian people and the alliance of the military, media, bureaucrats and judges who preferred a secular republic. Both Algeria and Tunisia only barely survived a similar, post-Arab “Spring” take-over by radical fundamentalists.

Obama arrives in Estonia to reassure Baltic leaders

U.S. President Barack Obama is greeted by Estonia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet, left, and Estonia's Chief of Protocol Toomas Kahur, as he arrives in Tallinn, Estonia, Sept. 3, 2014.
The president arrived in Estonia's port capital of Tallinn early Wednesday after an overnight flight from Washington. Obama was to hold a news conference with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, then hold broader security talks that include the leaders of Latvia and Lithuania.

Obama's daylong trip to Estonia comes ahead of a NATO summit this week at which allies will commit to a more robust response to Russia's incursion in Ukraine. Moscow's moves have sparked fears among member states on NATO's eastern flank that they could be Russian President Vladimir Putin's next target.

Japanese Scientists Develop 30 Minutes Ebola Test

Japanese researchers said Tuesday they had developed a new method to detect the presence of the Ebola virus in 30 minutes, with technology that could allow doctors to quickly diagnose infection.
Professor Jiro Yasuda and his team at Nagasaki University say their process is also cheaper than the system currently in use in west Africa where the virus has already killed more than 1,500 people.
"The new method is simpler than the current one and can be used in countries where expensive testing equipment is not available," Yasuda told AFP by telephone.
"We have yet to receive any questions or requests, but we are pleased to offer the system, which is ready to go," he said.
